Glenn ''RAZ'' Raswyck Director, Rock Medicine

RAZ first came to San Francisco on his way to Vietnam in July 1967, and ''fell in love with the fog.'' He moved to the Haight Ashbury in 1970, went to Alameda Junior College, and got a degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University in 1976. He worked for a general contractor, renovating old Victorian houses. RAZ came into Rock Medicine in 1980 as a Veteran's Outreach Program volunteer, and became the coordinator for HAFCI building renovation and maintenance in 1988. RAZ became Director of Rock Medicine in 1992 when the recession was making show biz lean. It was a tough year for Rock Medicine, but he produced a record year, especially with the reopening of the Fillmore.

RAZ wears a button that a volunteer gave him. It says, ''Don't mind my complaints, I really like what I'm doing,'' and feels that about sums it up. ''I like working for a place where the main product is humane and non-punitive services for people who need them.''

The occasion was Emergency Services Week, and the SF EMS Dept gave awards to 4 people: a nurse who was "Hospital Staff," a  "Field Worker," someone from Fire Dept, and Raz.

The wording on the very nice plaque is:

The 2000 EMS Community Member Award presented to GLENN "Raz" RASWYCK,  Rock Medicine, for outstanding performance as the Director of Rock Medicine. San Francisco Health Commission, May 16, 2000.

Speaking the EMS Director, Dr. John Brown, said very nice things about Raz being tireless and in good humor for several months leading up to New Year's and being instrumental in helping them figure out how to set up the several field hospitals they had around the city which considerably lightened the demand on EMS. He mentioned Halloween as the test. The nurse who received the award received hers for whipping everyone into shape to do the field hospital model!

When receiving the award RAZ said that he was only accepting it in the name of all the Rock Medicine Volunteers.
